Bright Math Ideas Blog Hop!

http://cherryworkshop.blogspot.com/
This weekend hop on over and pick up some great math ideas from many fabulous teacher bloggers. 20 great ideas and FREEBIES (Woo - hoo)  for you and your classroom.....so let's get started!

In my kindergarten classroom the boys and girls have been working on decomposing numbers less than or equal to 10.  I am always trying to think of new ways to engage them and love to add a fun theme into their every day math centers.
In getting ready for March, I made some math mats and tried them out on my kiddos today.  They LOVED them!! I am so thrilled to share this with you in hopes it will engage your kiddos too!

So  ... first I bought gold coins at the dollar store which I knew would excite even my struggling students. Right now gold coins should be easy to find but you can also use other maniputlatives you might already have.
Then... I got busy making math mats and laminating them so they would survive my busy classroom. I made enough for a center which typically is for 6 children.  My class consists of 25 students of varied abilities so I differentiated the mats so each child would be challenged.

I made a mat for numbers equal to 5, 10 and a blank one for those that have mastered 10. Then made an answer sheet to record their math equations on. My students had a ball pretending their gold came down from their rainbow and came up with different equations to equal to 5. How fun it is to see when students start to understand and have fun while learning. Next time we do this I will add the other mats to challenge a group of students who are ready for higher level equations. The Somewhere Over the Rainbow answer sheet is a freebie for you along with a glittering 5 math mat. FREEBIE is in the March Math packet preview. Enjoy!

.
I love freebies too!

The math mats are a part of a larger March Math packet filled with other fun math materials!
